Introduction

The Department of Public Health works on the rehabilitation of the cadres in the field of preventive medicine. A recent trend in most of countries in the world as per the guidelines of WHO, during the past ten years has focused on preventive medicine,  with its different branches, such as Epidemiology, Occupational health, International health and health travelers, Environmental health, Maternal and child health, Reproductive health and other activities based on the concept of Health Promotion, disease prevention excluding the treatment and medication, which leads to loss of manpower, material and disrupt the progress of its members.

       Indeed,   increase in the number of patients and the rate of illness reflects a failure of proper health monitoring thereby indicating lack of prevention programs and primary health care services, which is the outcome of preventive medicine, health and safety.

The Department of Public Health in Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences, is one of the sections working in the field of preventive medicine and offers its services through the presence of cadres of health centers and hospitals and implements programs and activities, as of the following: -

1.       Epidemiological survey: aims to search for sources of infection and eradicate the disease from its roots and not just treat the injured.

2.       Follow-up contacts and taking   samples and delineate the geographical factors  that are responsible for spreading of the disease.

3.       Infection control: the processing and preparation of disinfectants and sterilization .

4.       Control of communicable diseases: through education of citizens about good nutrition and early detection of diseases and immunization.

5.       Vector control: a most important pillars of public health and the department is taught extensively in theory and in practice.

6.       Health education.

7.       Statistics and epidemiological follow-up rates of incidence  of disease and infection rates and other indicators of health problems .

8.       Environmental Health and disposal of hazardous waste.

9.       Food control.

Objectives of the Department of Public Health

1.      Provide better education to keep up with the latest scientific developments at the level of Undergraduate

2.      The preparation of cadres of health care excellence in subspecialty of Public Health Science.

3.      The dissemination of culture and healthy change health habits among the members of the community.

4.      To provide high quality health services through qualified graduates

5.      Provide advisory services and applied scientific and continuing medical education programs for cadres specialized in the areas of public health
