4.3.2 Majmaah University’s Public Events and Community Engagement

Types of Events Hosted at MU

Majmaah University (MU) hosts a wide range of events open to the general public, including both one-time initiatives and recurring annual programs. These include public lectures, seminars, and workshops aimed at education and awareness, as well as larger forums like conferences and cultural festivals. The university organizes ad hoc special events (e.g. inaugural sports tournaments or one-off community campaigns) alongside programmed recurring events such as annual orientations and National Day celebrations. For instance, MU’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center regularly offers workshops, training courses, and public talks for students, entrepreneurs and community members in topics ranging from digital marketing to startup management mu.edu.sa mu.edu.sa. Likewise, community-oriented events span everything from academic symposiums to volunteer-driven service activities, ensuring a balance of scholarly, cultural, and service-focused programs.

Community Participation

At the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center at Majmaah University, the community activities focus on spreading the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship and empowering people to contribute to economic and social development through creative ideas and projects. These activities are motivating, educational, and interactive, targeting different groups within the local community. The community activities usually include: Workshops and training courses: They offer workshops and courses in innovation, idea generation, feasibility studies, business model building, digital marketing, basics of entrepreneurship, and startup management. These are for students, graduates, small and medium business owners, and anyone interested in improving their skills. Lectures and awareness seminars: Public talks and seminars were conducted with reexperts and successful entrepreneurs who share their experiences and knowledge. These events aim to inspire attendees, raise awareness about the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship, and highlight available opportunities. Events and idea incubators: Events like “idea hackathons” or “innovation camps” were held where people interested in innovation come together to solve social or economic challenges with creative ideas. Idea incubator programs were also conducted to help promising ideas grow into real projects. Consulting and mentoring: The Center provides advice and guidance to individuals and small to medium businesses in starting and developing their projects. This includes help with planning, funding, marketing, and management. Participation in exhibitions and community events: The Center takes part in local exhibitions and events to showcase the center’s initiatives, connect with the community, and encourage people to adopt the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. Launching community initiatives: The Center may start initiatives that target specific groups, such as supporting women entrepreneurs or encouraging innovation in sectors that serve local needs. Building partnerships with community organizations: The Center forms partnerships with government bodies, non-profit organizations, and the private sector to expand the impact of the community activities and achieve shared goals in supporting innovation and entrepreneurship.

Audience and Accessibility

MU actively invites and involves the broader community in its events. Attendance is open to local residents, school students, professionals, government and NGO partners – not just the university’s own staff or students. Many events are deliberately hosted on campus or in public venues to encourage outside participation, and some are broadcast online to reach a wider audience. For example, the annual freshman meeting is streamed live on YouTube and Twitter so that parents and the public can follow along mu.edu.sa. Major national ceremonies see local officials, community leaders, and citizens in attendance; during the 92nd Saudi National Day ceremony at MU, the Governor of Majmaah and numerous government department heads and local dignitaries joined faculty, students and the public in celebration mu.edu.sa. MU also partners with organizations to extend its reach – such as collaborating with local schools so that high school students can attend on-campus programs or take international tests at the university mu.edu.sa mu.edu.sa. The emphasis on inclusion ensures that events serve not only the campus but also the surrounding community and the broader Arab world. International conferences and forums hosted by MU attract participants from other universities and countries, while local initiatives often target families, youth, and underrepresented groups (for example, orphans and special needs individuals) to maximize community benefit.

MU’s Applied College has actively reached out to local schools as part of its community education efforts. In 2022, the college formed a team that visited secondary schools (e.g. Al-Tuwaijri High School) to introduce its programs and career-oriented courses mu.edu.sa mu.edu.sa. In one session, about 100 high school students attended an interactive orientation about applied college degrees, with faculty explaining fields like e-commerce, computer science, and smartphone app development mu.edu.sa. These sessions were done in partnership with the Majmaah Education Department, and school administrators praised MU for helping inspire and guide their students mu.edu.sa. Moreover, in the same academic year MU hosted the international PISA exam for dozens of local students by providing its computer labs as a testing venue mu.edu.sa. Education officials and MU staff cooperated to equip over 60 computers and supervise the exam for visiting students mu.edu.sa. By opening its facilities to schoolchildren and engaging directly with them, MU is extending educational resources to the wider population.

The Applied College holds a meeting to introduce its programs in public schools.

In line with its plan to introduce the programs of the Applied College and the Transformation Plan for Applied Colleges, and in partnership with public education schools, as they are considered an important and targeted segment in the advertising and marketing plan of the Applied College, and based on the necessity of activating the strategic objectives of the detailed plan for the Applied Colleges in particular, which is concerned with improving the mental image of the Applied Colleges, their qualifications and outputs in the community and employers, a work team led by the Vice Dean of the Applied College for Educational Affairs, Dr. Abdullah Al-Dakhil, visited the students of Al-Tuwaijri Complex Secondary School, where they were received by His Excellency Mr. Haqil Al-Haqil, the school principal.

  • Community Service and Volunteering:

A hallmark of MU’s public engagement is its volunteer initiatives. Each Hajj season, MU dispatches a team of student scouts to assist pilgrims in Mecca and Medina as part of nationwide public service programs. In 2023, for example, 16 MU scouts joined the Hajj service camps to guide lost pilgrims and provide on-site assistance mu.edu.sa. After the Hajj, the MU Rector formally welcomed and honored these scouts, highlighting that the university has participated in this annual volunteering effort since its establishment and emphasizing the importance of community service to the institution’s values mu.edu.samu.edu.sa. Closer to home, MU’s Social Responsibility Observatory runs the “Friends of the Blood Bank” club, which organized a blood donation campaign in August 2022. This drive – part of the Majmaah Youth Program in partnership with the Ministry of Sports – was held in a public venue (Jalajil city) and targeted community members mu.edu.sa. It resulted in 45+ donors from the public giving blood, with the collected units benefiting local hospitals mu.edu.sa. The head of MU’s Social Responsibility unit noted that such campaigns are aligned with the university leadership’s directives to “open up to society in all its components” and address community health needs in collaboration with external partners mu.edu.sa mu.edu.sa. These examples demonstrate MU’s commitment to volunteering and service events that directly involve and benefit the public.

  • Academic and Scientific Forums:

Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 period, MU continued to host academic events accessible to the public, often leveraging virtual platforms. In late 2021, the University Agency for Educational Affairs launched the Distinguished Student Projects Forum, which was held in-person at MU’s campus with precautions. The forum included an exhibition of student research projects where the University President and visitors could tour poster displays and listen to students explain their work mu.edu.sa mu.edu.sa. The event honored the best student projects and was positioned as part of a series aimed at enriching the academic environment and building bridges with the wider community through science mu.edu.sa. Furthermore, MU has shown readiness to host major conferences: it partnered with the Ministry of Education to participate in the 2022 International Conference & Exhibition for Education (ICEE), and it has been slated as a venue for high-level SDG-related conferences (e.g. on Sustainable Development 2030). These conferences typically welcome attendees from other universities, government ministries, and the public, enhancing MU’s profile as a convenor of knowledge-sharing events.

Under the patronage and honor of His Excellency the University President, Professor Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah Al-Muzal, the University Agency for Educational Affairs launched the activities of the Distinguished Student Projects Forum, at the college complex in the university city of Majmaah.

The event began with the University President opening the exhibition of student research projects, where he was briefed on the research and projects presented and listened to a detailed explanation of each project. His Excellency the University President then honored the winning projects, and commemorative photos were taken of the winners.

For his part, the University Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs, Prof. Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Aboudi, explained that this forum aims to ensure the quality of education and enhance the educational environment by enriching the academic arena with scientific and research projects that contribute to the development of knowledge, enhance research values, and build bridges of scientific communication, by reviewing the most important experiences and distinguished projects in this regard.

The forum is being held as an extension of the forums organized by the University Agency for Educational Affairs with the aim of achieving the university's educational goals by improving the educational process.

  • Partnership Events and NGO Collaborations:

MU frequently collaborates with government agencies and non-profits to co-host community programs. A notable example is the Productive Families Exhibition held in 2021 in partnership with the Ensan Association (a charity for orphans). MU’s Vice-Rectorate for Female Student Affairs hosted this exhibition on campus, where local families supported by Ensan displayed their products for sale mu.edu.sa. The event included a children’s activity corner and was attended by university leaders, staff, and community members, embodying MU’s support for social development and entrepreneurship among disadvantaged groups mu.edu.sa. In another instance, MU’s Applied Medical Sciences faculty partnered with the Salik Traffic Safety Center and local authorities to run a public awareness exhibition titled “Together to Reduce Traffic Accidents” at the Applied College in Ramah mu.edu.sa. This exhibition brought together officials from the police, health department, and education sector, and it saw organized visits from school students as well as drop-in visits from local citizens mu.edu.sa. The display featured interactive exhibits and information to improve traffic safety culture among youth and the community, and it was praised for its strong multi-sector partnership approach mu.edu.sa mu.edu.sa. Most recently, in 2024 MU’s Environment Week exhibition (noted above) involved collaboration with 14 external environmental bodies ranging from government ministries to green NGOs mu.edu.sa – a scale of partnership that significantly broadened the event’s community impact. These collaborative events underscore how MU leverages partnerships to host inclusive activities that address community needs, whether economic, safety-related, or environmental.

The University Vice President, Prof. Dr. Muslim bin Mohammed Al-Dosari, inaugurated an awareness exhibition under the slogan (Together to Reduce Traffic Accidents), which was held at the Applied College in Ramah Governorate, with the participation of a number of security, health and educational sectors in the governorate. This exhibition, which was implemented by the Salik Traffic Safety Center, is one of the programs and activities organized by the center, which aims to spread traffic awareness and culture among university employees and the surrounding community. Mr. Mutab bin Mohammed Al-Maimouni, Director General of the Services Department, stated that the exhibition received diverse participation from vital sectors, and with the participation of public education schools in Ramah Governorate, in order to raise the level of traffic safety in the governorate through partnership with the concerned authorities. He stated that the exhibition, which was inaugurated by the University Vice President, Prof. Dr. Muslim Al-Dosari, accompanied by the Director of the Education Office in Ramah, Mr. Mahdi Al-Sahli, comes as an extension of the (Draw and Color) initiative implemented in public schools, and also enhances the university’s efforts in spreading the importance of traffic safety to students, especially students at this stage. Al-Maimouni added that the exhibition, since its first hours of opening, has received organized and multiple visits from public and university students in Ramah Governorate, and has also received a good turnout from the local community. Al-Maimouni expressed his appreciation to His Excellency the President of the University, Prof. Dr. Saleh Al-Mazal, for his continuous support to spread traffic safety programs in all sectors of the university to serve male and female students and the community, extending his sincere thanks to the Vice President of the University, Prof. Dr. Musallam Al-Dosari for his care and interest in implementing the traffic safety plan in Ramah Governorate to raise the level of traffic safety for the movement witnessed by road users in Ramah Governorate. Al-Maimouni also extended his thanks to the General Administration of Administrative and Financial Affairs for the continuous support, and to all the work teams, the college administration and participants from vital sectors in Ramah Governorate, and to the partners in the private sector who enriched the exhibition activities with what they presented, hoping that the impact of this exhibition will be reflected in achieving the Kingdom’s vision and the Quality of Life Program with regard to reducing the rate of traffic accidents.

Each of the examples above highlights Majmaah University’s commitment to community education and public engagement. By hosting such a variety of events over the 2019–2024 period – and by measuring success in terms of public attendance, cross-sector partnerships, and positive societal impact – MU demonstrates that it views its role as a catalyst for community development. These efforts, spanning cultural celebration, lifelong learning, health and well-being, and social responsibility, collectively reinforce MU’s mission to serve the community beyond its campus walls mu.edu.sa mu.edu.sa. The university’s public events not only enrich the local region and the broader Arab community but also align with global sustainability goals and the criteria of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, showcasing how MU contributes to society through education, partnership and outreach.
